Ultimately the dual image of God and man brings me to Christ. Jesus, true God and true Man, referred to as The Last Adam in 1 Corinthians 15:45.
We now come to the deepest level of understanding of the double image. Rather than a physical engraving of my likeness in the hand of God we come to a Spiritual inscription.
Hebrews 10:15-16, referring to the prophetic oracle of Jeremiah 31:33, states:
15 And the Holy Spirit also bears witness to us; for after saying,
16 “This is the covenant that I will make with them after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my laws on their hearts, and write them on their minds,”
The future promise of a new covenant written about in Jeremiah is now a present reality.
The exterior law has been fulfilled by Jesus, and we live in a new era of Grace. Regenerate Christians have the law of God inscribed upon their hearts and their minds. We serve God out of devotion from our new hearts.
Put another way, because of the work of Christ, the Holy Spirit lives in believers giving us access to God.
The dual image is more than a reference to physicality; it also refers to the deeper spiritual reality shared between us and God.
This is amazing.
The image shown is a portion of a painting entitled “The Pentecost” by Titian.
