The Resurrection and the Life

John 11:25-27

25 Jesus said to her [Martha], “I am the resurrection and the life.  Whoever believes in me, though he die, yet shall he live, 26 and everyone who lives and believes in me shall never die.  Do you believe this?” 27 She said to him, “Yes, Lord; I believe that you are the Christ, the Son of God, who is coming into the world.”

The Resurrection Prophecy

Jesus is speaking to Martha, the sister of Lazarus, just before raising Lazarus from his physical death.  When Jesus and Martha have this conversation, Lazarus has been dead for four days.  Not mostly dead, all dead.  Jesus brought Lazarus back to life.

Adam’s sin in the garden brought both physical and spiritual death to humanity.  Spiritual death in that Adam became separated from God.  Ouch.

Jesus told the disciples three times that he must go to Jerusalem and die.  He also told them that he would be resurrected each of these times.

Jesus is the resurrection.  His obedience brings the believer the promise of eternal spiritual life.  A life that begins with faith and continues with a transition into the direct presence of God.
