Symbols are similar to computer icons, but go a bit deeper. An icon on a computer is a visual shorthand. A summarizing image that has meaning for you. The symbol is a visual shorthand like an icon, but the symbol tends has a conceptual component that the icons don’t have.
In the Juggler image, the juggler in the upper left is an icon; it’s a visual summary of a juggler. The juggler in the lower right is more symbolic, it shows someone who is trying to ‘juggle’ their limited resources: friends, money, and time.
Jesus is a heavy user of symbols. To help understand the I AM the Bread of Life statement by Jesus, I typically begin by trying to understanding the symbolic meaning of Bread to the audience that Jesus was speaking to.
