Isaiah 49:16a: “Behold, I have engraved you on the palms of my hands;”
This verse moves us towards the core of the meaning behind the double image.
The image and text speak to the strength of God’s love for us.
Initially I think of the design of mankind sculpted out into the very palm of God’s hands. We are made in his image. But it goes deeper.
I wear a ring on my left hand. I see it daily and it reminds me of my wife and my daughter. Rather than a ring worn on God’s hand, I am deeply and permanently sculpted into God’s hands. God cannot look at his own hands without constantly thinking of me.
It is a profound metaphor.
In part 5 we conclude the Genesis image with the work of Christ and a passage from Hebrews 10.
