The 12 Christian symbols in the outer ring of the mandala explain the center of the mandala.  They are classic Christian symbols and breakout as follows:

  1. Sun. Three concentric five pointed stars with rays streaming away from the center of the mandala.  This is a prophetic symbol for Christ who is described in Malachi 4:2 as the Sun of Righteousness.  Really, Sun, not Son.
  2. I believe this symbol is a Winged Ox the symbol for Saint Luke.
  3. Dove Descending. The Holy Spirit.  Again, the Spirit moves outward from the center of the mandala.
  4. Winged Lion. Saint Mark.
  5. Chalice and Wafer. Holy Communion.
  6. Agnus Dei. Standing lamb with cross and banner.  The Risen Christ.
  7. Cross and thorns. The crucifixion of Jesus.
  8. Eagle. Saint John.
  9. Anchor. Hope and steadfastness in faith.
  10. Winged Man. Saint Matthew.
  11. Book with the Greek letters Alpha and Omega. Word of God and reference to Christ.
  12. Two tablets with Roman numerals. The Ten Commandments representing the Law.

Notice the focus on the work of Christ.

It is also interesting the two tablets are opposite the Agnus Dei, calling to mind the passage from John 1:17: For the law was given through Moses; grace and truth came through Jesus Christ.

Finally note how all the symbols move away from the center of the mandala.  This does two things.  First, it helps to make clear that the center of the mandala represents God.  Second, it reminds us of a God who pursues us by sending His Spirit and His Word to bring us into the light.

In part 4 we move onto a 60 year old stained glass mandala with some expected and some unexpected symbolism.
